You should not have to translate yourself to be understood

Starting therapy is hard enough. Doing it with someone who does not understand where you come from can feel impossible. Many people who reach out to us have quietly wondered whether therapy is even meant for them, or whether they will spend the first several sessions explaining their family, their culture, and their world before the real work can begin.

That weight is real. A breakup, a loss, or a hard season does not mean the same thing for everyone. The person navigating the expectations of an arranged-marriage, rebuilding a life after moving to a new country, or holding a family's career, relationship, and external perception on their shoulders carries a different story than the textbooks describe. When a therapist misses that context, you end up doing the work of teaching them instead of being cared for.

You deserve a space where your background is understood, not questioned. That is where we begin.

What is culturally responsive therapy?

Culturally responsive therapy means your therapist looks at your whole story, not just the problem in front of you. It considers the biological, psychological, and social parts of your life, and how your culture, language, family, and community shape what you are going through.

It is not a separate type of therapy. It is a lens applied to whatever approach fits you best, so the care you receive reflects who you actually are.

How we help

Valentía y Grit was founded by Neudis Abreu, a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying), out of her own experience rebuilding life in a new country: navigating identity, grief, belonging, and starting over. She built this practice so that care would feel relatable, not clinical or out of reach.

Our therapists are emerging professionals who are knowledge keepers of their own communities and culture, working under close supervision and the ethical standards of the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario. They bring their own cultural roots into the room, not leave them at the door.

  • Care in your language: our team offers therapy in many languages, including English, Spanish, Mandarin, Arabic, Urdu, and more.
  • Shared lived experience: you do not need a therapist identical to you. You need one who understands context, so you feel understood rather than explained-away.
  • A trauma-informed lens: we work with an awareness of how past experiences shape the present, across whichever approach fits you.

What changes when you feel understood

You stop translating yourself. Sessions start where you are, not with a cultural briefing.

Therapy in your own words. Speaking in the language you think and feel in changes what is possible.

Care you can actually access. Quality support at a rate that respects real life, so cost is less likely to stand between you and help.

FAQ's About Culturally Responsive Therapy

It is therapy that takes your full context into account: your culture, language, family, and community, alongside what brought you in. Your therapist adapts their approach to fit your story rather than expecting you to fit theirs.

No. That is a common belief, but it is a myth. What matters is working with someone trained to understand context and difference, who meets your story with genuine understanding. Many people heal well with a therapist who is not from their exact background.

Our team is multilingual, and the languages available shift as our roster grows. We currently offer support in several languages including English, Mandarin, Arabic, Romanian, Tamil, French, Polish, and Persian. Reach out and we will let you know who is available

Our sessions are offered at an accessible rate, well below the typical starting price for private therapy. If you see a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying), your receipt can often be submitted to insurance providers such as Sun Life, Manulife, or Green Shield. If affordability is a concern, ask us about your options.

Yes. Our therapists are emerging professionals working under close clinical supervision and the ethical standards of the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario. This model is what lets us offer skilled, attentive care at an accessible rate.

You do not have to do this alone

Healing should never be out of reach because of cost, culture, or distance. If you have been waiting for a space that understands who you are, this is your invitation to begin.
